THE ESSENCE OF YOGA THERAPY AND ITS PERSPECTIVES

According to Patanjali's Yoga Sutra, yoga is therapeutic in its very essence. Master T. Krishnamacharya and his son TKV Desikachar, teacher to Dr. NC, have specialized in this discipline, which emerged in India around 1920. The main agent of Yoga Therapy is the transmission of a personal practice adapted to the individual, the terrain and the symptom, in order to act upon the cause.

Yoga Therapy seeks to heal and to reduce pain. It interest lies in the patient more than the symptom: no illness exists in itself, but it inhabits the individual. Its name is the same, but all individuals are unique and highly individualized at all levels. Therefore in Yoga Therapy, there can be no standardized prescription for a specific illness. Dr. NC's teaching and practice acknowledge and respect the individual particularity which constitutes each human being.

Health is the single greatest richness we can possess; as such, it should be perfect at all levels – physical, physiological et psychological. Hence, the rich palette of tools available in Yoga Therapy allows to touch upon all planes of the individual: sounds and mantras touch the heart and the spiritual roots, breathing techniques soothe the mind, and physical practice of adapted postures restores physical health. Yoga Therapy simultaneously integrates these in an individualized manner within a harmonious whole.
